Week 6: So, I had a Great Idea. . .

You all did such a great job last week figuring out how to customize your blogs, wade into TaskStream, and even collaborate using Google Docs, that I have decided you need more responsibility. . .

This Week: Okay, so I was thinking. Don't laugh, it happens sometimes.  We are set to do a presentation project, which was traditionally only completed with PowerPoint, and for a small group of students, Prezi. . .  I am going to give you the option of three tools: PowerPoint, Google Presentation, or Prezi.  Although PowerPoint is so last century, it is still one of the only ways that most people present information to large groups (click here and push play!). . . Many of you may not have seen Prezi before, so I will use it to introduce the entire assignment.  I think you just might like it.  We will also be using Google Docs, and specifically, Google Forms, to create an assessment for your peers based on your presentation!  When it comes to how to learn the tool, I want you to try and figure out how to use the Internet as a resource to learn the tool. . .as I demonstrated for you last week, the Internet, with sites like Delicious and YouTube are a wealth of information to figure out how to do just about anything. . .I am going to test your ability to do just this. . . .I will, however, show you how to use Google Forms to create an assessment for your presentation!

Yea, so ISTE has a new website. . .Great, right?  Well, not so great.  They are requiring that each member create a new password to enter the site.  For those of you who are a bit techno-sketchy, this isn't a good thing.  Alas, even their built-in method of acquiring a new log-in doesn't work so well.  Some of you will probably have to contact their customer service: 1.800.336.5191 .  They do have live chat, but that ends at 4pm. . .and class begins at 5:30. . .hey, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right . . .right?

What should be completed by now:  The newsletter, Delicious.com, School 2.0, scan, IntroLetter, and some of those journals. . .I told you not to wait ;-)

Journal 5:  Go to Twitter and search for ed422.  Find the retweet that lists Twitter for Learning - 55 great articles.  Click on the link, read one of the articles for your Journal 5.  Don't forget to use the Citation Machine so I can trace the article and perhaps read it myself. . . And this is extra credit, btw.

This week's Question:  If this class were pass/fail instead of letter grade, would you try just as hard?  Explain.

  1. I think I would try just as hard because I like to get the most out of my education, especially with a class like this one because I feel I can really benifit in my future career as a teacher from it. With that said striving to get (A) in a class is an incentive so maybe if that was gone I wouldn't try as hard. ;)

  2. I would try just as hard. I find that; 1: I want to do well in this class not only to show the professor that I am putting in much effort into my assignments. However, I want to prove to myself that I understand what I am learning in class as well as outside the classroom. Second reason is that I'm paying to go to this class.

  3. I would say yea, just because I don't like to half a** any job mine. You got to take pride in your work right?

  4. Yes, I think that I would try just as hard if not harder because there's only 50/50 chance of passing, when there are letter grades I think that there is a higher chance? I think that no matter how a class defines success, we should try our hardest.

  5. It depends on the situation. if this was my only class I was enrooled in,or if i was enrolled in 12 units then yes I would try just as hard because I would have the time even if it was just a pass or a fail. However, with the preassures from the 5 other classes I am taking, along with work, and somewhere in there a social life, if it was just a pass/fail intead of grade I would probably not try as hard but still try to some degree because i think the material is interesting and useful to my future as a teacher and individual. At least I am being honest :)

  6. I would definitely try just as hard, that's just the type of person I am. I Don't just like to succeed, I like to do my best. My work is important to me and I don't half fast anything. By not caring as much or not putting in as much time or effort just because the letter grade doesn't matter is just robbing yourself of getting the full experience of the class and really coming away with everything the class had to offer.

  7. I would try just as hard but subconsciously the pass/fail grading would be a mitigating factor in my time management. It's simple economics, the cost of my time must be used efficiently. If the next best choice is giving my time to a letter grade then the pass/fail would suffer.

  8. Yes I would try just as hard because I want to pass it. Also, this class is really good for me. I need to learn the material. I actually print out all the directions for the assignments and are saving them in a folder. I am certain that when I start teaching I will need them as a resource, and will revisit them.

  9. If this class a pass or fail, I would try even harder. My goal is to improve my GPA. I am determined to get a good grade in this class. Plus, I really enjoy the class. I am learning a lot for a person who is not tech savvy.

  10. If this class was pass or fail i would try just as hard as i am now, maybe even harder. I like knowing where i am on the grading scale and it helps me be at ease with how i am doing with the course. I prefer grading scale, i think i would over stress if the course was pass or no pass.

  11. Honestly I would not try as hard, when it comes to pass fail its a lot easier to pass that class, therefore I would not present my best work. I would do just the minimum to pass.

  12. I would try just as hard as i am now. I am staying on top of the assignments and trying my hardest to understand what is happening every week. This information is helpful and i know i will use it again someday. Also i am a very anxious person. I would hate to be noticed for doing something poorly or not trying at all. If i ever were to be called out in class for not doing an assignment I would probably shrivel and die right there on the spot.

  13. Yes, I would try as hard, because being from the dark ages it takes me more time to learn some of this new stuff. I also think it is important to learn this information so I am successful incorporating it into my classroom.

  14. I would definitely still try in the class because there are aspects of the class that will be hugely beneficial to me as an educator. However, if i am not going to see an A on my transcript either way, I may not go over and beyond. Honestly ;)

  15. I would try just as hard, because this is an important class for my future career as an educator and i want to learn as much as possible and be able to retain all the information. If I didn't try so hard or if I put some of my work aside I may not be able to retain the info and fall behind.

  16. I think that I would try just as hard. Especially since this class is pertaining toward my major. I want to know as much as I can so that I will be ready to implement different technology aspects in the classroom.

  17. I think that it would depend on the individual projects in the class. Some projects that we have done, I have been excited about and tried hard, however, other assignments I have not been very interested in, or lost so I probably would not try hard.

  18. Yes, I would try just as hard, because it would help me in the long run to understand as much as I can as I am learning new things. Although, I do prefer letter grade than pass/fail because it allows me to see how well I'm doing in the class, and keep me less stressed out.

  19. Yes, I would try just as hard because the experience of learning the technology techniques is very important to me. The fact that this class will benefit my future as a great teacher is another motivating factor. Any class I take is an opportunity for me to improve my work habits. If I always work hard then I will not find it difficult later when I have to work hard in my career or for another class that is graded. I am all about forming positive habits when it comes to education.

  20. Yes, I would try just as hard because you need to get everything out of the class that you can. There is something different in every class and you need to find what it is you can take away from this experience.

  21. In this class, I think I would. I don't see how I could benefit if I didn't care about my work. I have learned how to do a lot of cool new things with the web that seemed so foreign to me before.

  22. Yes I would because Im the type of person that performs its job 120% of the time. School shouldn't be any difference. On the plus side Im learning a lot in this class.

  23. I would put the same effort into this class if it were a letter grade. I put the same effort to all my classes because I think it is important to learn something from each course that I take. Knowing that a class would be a pass or fail class, I would still put the same effort I would in the rest of my courses.

  24. If this class were pass or fail instead of letter grade, I would try just as hard as I am now. I would this because I want to learn as much information as possible because I am going to need it for my future career. As a teacher, I want to implement these cool ideas with my students.

  25. I would probably need to do all the assignments to pass even if it was a pass or fail class so yes it would probably be the same amount of work

  26. I would try even harder. I would look for more help and stay after class to work one on one with the professor.

  27. At first I was thinking that I wouldn't try as hard, because as long as I passed I'd be happy. But then thinking about it, whenever I do my homework I try to do my very best. My work is a reflection of me, and I wouldn't want to look bad.

  28. Yes because I would feel better with myself knowing that I learned something and not wasted time.

  29. Unfortunately because I have such a busy schedule this semester, if this class were pass/fail I probably wouldn't try as hard. Honest Truth.
